In display case 3, number 19, mounted at the back, is an askos\u2014a type of flask\u2014featuring a relief of the goddess Artemis. She appears in frontal view, her head turned left, reaching back for an arrow from her quiver. Traces of original paint suggest that this vessel was once richly colored. <\/p>\n
The spout of the askos is shaped like a lion’s head, and the body is decorated with an ivy-wrapped vegetal spiral\u2014typical of the \u201cWestern Slope\u201d style of the Hellenistic period. This decorative style is named after the western slope of the Athenian Acropolis, where such motifs were first discovered.
