THE COLLECTION

Section 10. Weaving

Weaving implements, such as loomweights – some of which are stamped with the name of their owner –, spindle whorls and spools, even from the Neolithic Period, as well as a silver pin, are displayed in Case 19 of Room C, attesting to the inhabitants’ practice of the art of weaving. Alongside these, in Case 20, is a display of nine female clay figurines from the Archaic Period, whose clothing is rendered in colour. The design of the cloth worn by one of these (no. 9) is reproduced on the upright loom that has been constructed here. The cloth that was produced was made of wool, while clay loomweights were used to hold the warp yarns in place.
