The ancient city of Aiani is undoubtedly identified with the settlement uncovered at the site of Megali Rachi, a high and fortified hill shaped into terraces. The discovery of remains of magnificent public buildings, private residences, a central water reservoir for the settlement, communication roads, shops, workshops, and religious spaces demonstrates a significant, organized city as early as the 6th century BCE.
The exceptional importance of the site is also confirmed by its very early and long-lasting habitation, which dates back to the Neolithic era, continuing through the Bronze and Iron Ages.
The city maintained direct cultural relations and exchanges with the wider Greek world while also supporting local production.
Megali Rachi was permanently abandoned, likely after an earthquake, at the end of the Hellenistic period in the 1st century BCE.
