Exhibit No. 6

Statue of a Nike

This marble statue represents a female figure, likely the goddess Nike. Only the torso down to the knees survives; the head, arms, and lower legs are missing. Holes on the sides show that the arms were attached separately, and there are abrasions on the surface of the garment.

The figure is shown in motion—this is evident in the strong stride and the dynamic folds of her garment. She wears a short peplos with an overfold. The raised right shoulder suggests that her right arm was extended, possibly holding a wreath. Her wings, like her arms, were probably added separately. The statue likely decorated the front of a public building in the agora of ancient Aiani. It was discovered in 1956 in a private garden in Aiani and dates to the 4th century BC.
