Exhibit No. 8

Relief Skyphos bearing a Homeric Scene

In Case 7, you’ll find fine examples of relief pottery made by using molds—typical of the Hellenistic period. These ceramic vessels imitate bronze forms. Their decoration covers nearly the entire outer surface, except for the rim, and often features symmetrical motifs with mythological, Homeric, erotic, or floral scenes. Skyphos number 12, now reassembled and restored, shows a vivid scene from the Sack of Troy. You can see the city walls, the Trojan Horse, and the heroes of the war, who are identified by inscriptions. This piece also dates to the Hellenistic period.

Relief pottery like this was produced in a well-known workshop in Pella, whose influence reached surrounding areas. Local workshops have also been identified in Aiani and other cities of Western Macedonia.
