Exhibit No. 20

Female Bust - "Kore of Aiani"

In Case 11, item number 8, is a terracotta bust of a young woman, often referred to as the “Kore of Aiani.” This funerary offering was found in a tomb in the royal necropolis and dates to the early 5th century BC. The bust was made using a mold, with a hollow back and faint traces of white paint still visible on the face.

Black and red paints highlight details such as her headband, earrings, and necklace. At the top of the head is a hole, likely used to hang the bust on the tomb wall, since it cannot stand upright on its own. Female busts like this were as offerings in temples and as grave goods —especially in tombs of women, children, and youths—and even appeared in the interiors of houses.
